Diet and Nutrition

Ayurveda teaches that health is maintained by the balancing of the three  Doshas, Vatha, Pitta and Kapha. According to ayurveda, the five fundamental elements that make up the universe, space (akasha), air (vayu), fire (agni), water (apu) and earth (prithvi) also make up the human physiology. Vata dosha is made up of space and air. Pitta dosha is a combination of fire and water. Kapha dosha is made up of water and earth.

How to self assess your Dosha:

The Dosha can be correctly diagnosed in the early morning, 20 minutes after waking.

For men the right, women the left wrist, take pulse with the ring, middle and index fingers.

To begin watch the breath until it calms to a normal 66 breaths per minute.

1)     PULSE : per minute

Kapha Dosha  60 to 70

Pitta Dosha  70 to 80

Vata Dosha   80 to 90

2) FINGER : Note the pulse with ring, middle and index fingers and  sense in which finger the pulse is strong or predominant.

Kapha Ring,

Pitta Middle,

Vata Index

3)     NATURE : Observe the nature of the pulse:

Kapha – Strong, regular, warm, broad, slow;

Pitta – Jumping, regular, hot, moderate, speed;

Vata – Weak, cool, thin, irregular, fast

Do not read the pulse after massage, eating, sun bathing, sitting by fire, hard physical labour, while bathing or when hungry as it will not reflect your normal pulse.
